Now some people think of sketching and drawing as art and as requiring artistic talent, but I don't really believe that's the case. And so, you're going to engage with an expert to help you out with that. There is a role for such renderings in the design process, but in general, it requires expertise beyond the scope of a quick video tutorial. What I'm not going to be able to do is teach you photorealistic rendering techniques. The first is for you to be able to better communicate your design to others, and the second is to help you better visualize your design in the course of the design process itself. Now, my goal with this module is to teach you relatively quick sketching and visualization techniques. In other words, I'm going to teach you to draw. Hi there, I'm Karl Ulrich and I'm going to teach you to better represent your designs on a whiteboard, a computer screen, or a sheet of paper.
This format allows you to see an interesting collection of projects while getting useful feedback on your own project. All project work is evaluated by your peers - and indeed, you will also be a peer reviewer. Both groups seem to benefit substantially from the course. In prior sessions of the course about half of the participants were novices and about half had prior professional design expertise. You, the student, bring to the course your particular interests and expertise related to, for instance, engineering, furniture, fashion, architecture, or products. The emphasis of the course is the basic design process: define, explore, select, and refine. The course is deliberately broad - spanning all domains of design, including architecture, graphics, services, apparel, engineered goods, and products. Weekly design challenges test your ability to apply those ideas to solve real problems. Lectures and readings will lay out the fundamental concepts that underpin design as a human activity. The course marries theory and practice, as both are valuable in improving design performance.
This is a course aimed at making you a better designer.
